S-D.R.E.S.: respond before overflow.
Self-Responding Drainage & Emergency Diversion System — a physical prototype concept for detecting blockage and diverting water through a bypass path.
Status note: S-D.R.E.S. is a prototype concept. This page does not claim that a full-scale municipal system has been deployed or independently validated.
The idea
Blocked drains can cause water to back up. S-D.R.E.S. explores a small demonstrator that combines a filter screen, a main drainage channel, a bypass route, and a collection area to show how flow could be redirected when the main path is obstructed.
Core demonstration
- Detect: demonstrate a blockage or rising water level with a simple sensor or visible indicator.
- Divert: route excess water through a bypass channel in the model.
- Indicate: show when maintenance or clearing is needed.
Prototype design goals
- Use affordable, replaceable parts.
- Demonstrate multiple scenarios with the same model.
- Make the water path visible to judges and observers.
- Keep electrical components separated from water and use appropriate low-voltage safety practices.
What still needs validation
A tabletop model can demonstrate a principle, but it cannot prove municipal-scale capacity, long-term reliability, or performance in real storm conditions. Those require controlled tests, engineering review, and field evaluation.
Tagline
